Support Ends for 98 & ME | Upgrade Recommendations

 From the Editor

Is it time for some new hardware?  The newer, more stable operating systems from Microsoft really need more horsepower and RAM.  As support ends for Windows 98SE and Windows ME, maybe this would be a good time to look at replacing some of your older computers.

Be sure to check the dates in the sidebar for our upcoming Agency Advantage User's Meeting to be held in Atlanta, GA.  Meet our staff members and get some great training on The Agency Advantage. Plus, you'll get a preview of next generation products in development right now! Look for lots more to be announced in upcoming issues of the newsletter.

If you have a question or topic you would like explained, a story to share, or just a quick useful tip, we'd love to hear from you. Please send your responses to tina@agencyadvantage.com.

Support Ends for Windows 98SE & Windows ME

Microsoft has announced that they will end support of these two operating systems on June 30, 2006. We will end our support of these operating systems on this date, as well.

Microsoft's latest development software used by The Agency Advantage to design and produce our software is designed for use with the latest operating systems.  Continuing to use Windows 98SE or Windows ME in your agency could cause problems to arise that would be difficult if not impossible to fix.

After June 30, 2006, Microsoft will no longer make available patches or fixes to Windows 98SE or Windows ME .

From the Microsoft website:

Microsoft will not publicly release non-critical security hotfixes for Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, or Windows Millennium Edition. However, customers may request a non-critical security hotfix through On-Demand Security Hotfix support, which is offered for these products through June 30, 2006. When a request is received, Microsoft will investigate the issue and try to provide an appropriate response to the customer.

If you are running Windows 98, 98SE, or ME, it is highly recommended that you upgrade to Windows 2000 or XP Pro before June 30th.

 Upgrade Recommendations

Many agencies haven't upgraded their computers because of the seemingly high cost of the new operating systems (XP Pro for example). With the new operating system comes the need for a more powerful computer. However, new computer systems, complete with new and current operating system, from major manufacturers are very affordable. A new, more powerful and reliable PC can be purchased for less than $700. Some manufacturers run specials or online deals periodically and an entire computer system can be purchased for even less!

With technology advancing quickly, a computer can become obsolete in a just a few years, but because of decreasing computer prices, it is easier for any size agency to keep their equipment and operating systems current.

On the sidebar to the right are links to computer manufacturers and websites where you can purchase XP Pro at some of the lowest prices on the Web.

As always, if you have any questions, please contact us at support@agencyadvantage.com.
